Gerald Schantz has been cooking for satisfied crowds in the Coastal Empire for over 20 years. His specialty is meat; barbecue, brisket and more. But he has not limited himself to this specialty. Gerald loves seafood and is very particular about properly cooked shrimp. Over the years he has collected hundreds of recipes and perfected his techniques. Originally a part-time venture, cooking has become the focus of his life. By the mid-nineties he had chalked up an impressive roster of happy eaters including the cast and crew of This Old House and cast and crew members of several movies filmed in his hometown of Savannah, Georgia. As the popularity of Gerald’s food grew he dreamed of opening his own restaurant. In 2006 his dream came to life when he purchased a small café in Savannah’s historic downtown. |

Gerald’s Diner has since become a popular lunch spot featuring a a good selctionof meatand seafood entrées and a variety of grill items. The only complaint he has heard from his customers is that they eat too much. Most days Gerald is in the kitchen himself, making certain the food meets his exacting standards. Gerald is especially well known for his fine smoked meat including ribbs, brisket, pork butt amd mouth-watering good pulled pork barbecue. The pork barbecue is available most days at Gerald's Diner.

A look at Gerald’s menu gives only a hint of his scope and virtuosity in the kitchen. Mondays the diner features Gerald’s smoked, pulled pork barbecue or his rich, juicy meatloaf. Tuesdays, fried chicken complements the pork barbecue. Wednesday’s it’s a choice of chicken parmesan or spaghetti and meat sauce in addition to the ubiquitous pork barbecue. Thursdays the choices are fried pork chops and smoked chicken and Fridays feature fried fish filets with an optional side of fried shrimp. It’s all simple fare but done to Gerald’s high standards. In addition to the above listed entrées, each day features a variety of side dishes including collard greens, honey-glazed carrots, white or red rice, okra and tomatoes, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato soufflé, broccoli, lima bens, mashed potatoes and gravy, Brussels sprouts, rice pilaf with pine nuts, cauliflower, corn pudding and black-eyed peas. Breads and desrts are also available daily. Of course these sides aren’t available every day.
